Nausea is an unpleasant sensation in the chest, oral cavity and pharynx, which often precedes vomiting. The vomiting center in the brain plays a direct role in the development of feelings of nausea. Nerve cells are excited by incoming stimuli from the digestive tract.

Often nausea occurs simultaneously with other symptoms - headache, dizziness, fever, or sweating. Depending on the cause of nausea, abdominal pain or cramping of the gastrointestinal tract sometimes occurs.

Why can folk remedies for nausea be dangerous?

Nausea is not a disease, but a symptom that can have many causes. The following is an overview of the most common causes:

• Diseases of the abdominal cavity (pancreas, cecum, gall bladder and liver);

• Infectious diseases;

• food intolerance;

• Side effects of drugs (after general anesthesia and radiation therapy or chemotherapy);

• Mental disorders;

• Irritation of the balance organs;

• Metabolic disorders.

Nausea can also occur with a concussion, sunstroke, or a migraine attack. It is characteristic that women are more likely to experience discomfort in the early stages of pregnancy.

Folk remedies for nausea do not act on a specific disease, but on a symptom. They do not take into account the general condition of the patient, concomitant diseases and tolerance to substances, therefore they can do more harm than good.

Folk remedies for nausea: herbal medicine

1. Mix green tea extract with hot water and take on an empty stomach.

Doctor's comment:patients who hope to get rid of nausea with a single cup of tea will be disappointed. Some diseases require a longer and more consistent treatment. In a study at an Iranian university, 20 subjects aged 18 to 25 years took either a placebo or green tea extract containing at least one percent tannin twice a day for four weeks.

Tannins are polyphenols that are responsible for the tart taste of tea. They protect cells from degenerative changes. Tea rinsing with mouthwash or oral administration has a pronounced antibacterial effect. However, it does not relieve nausea, and in high doses can aggravate it.

2. Grind quince seeds in a coffee grinder, mix with water and 2 drops of vodka. Then drink the resulting mixture.

Doctor's comment:Quince contains mucus, toxic cyanogenic glycosides and essential oils. A large amount of vitamin C, potassium, sodium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, fluorine, tannins (catechins and epicatechins), tannic and organic acids were also detected. Quince seeds containing hydrocyanic acid are used in folk medicine to treat nausea.

A high dose of cyanogenic glycosides causes severe poisoning when taken orally. It is recommended to abandon the recipe, since the cyanide content varies greatly between different varieties.

3. Grind the dried leaves of the watch, pour boiled water and drink 3-4 times a day.

Doctor's comment: they say that the dried leaves of a flowering plant have a healing effect. The active ingredients are: secreted glycoproteins, monoterpene alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, phenolic acids and tannins.

All parts of the plant are poisonous. The main active ingredients are alkaloids, such as gentaninin. When administered orally, unpleasant headaches may occur. Large doses can cause vomiting and diarrhea, but this can only be expected if the extract is abused. The recipe is dangerous, therefore unsuitable for daily or single use.

4. Cut into small pieces dried marshmallows, put in a saucepan and cook for 2 hours on low heat. Strain the mixture and drink with cinnamon or lemon until nausea disappears.

Doctor's comment:marshmallow does not contain substances that have an antiemetic effect. The action is explained by placebo: the patient's faith in the effectiveness of the decoction. A placebo relieves mild nausea but does not cope with severe vomiting. Ineffective tool, but harmless.

Folk remedies for nausea: food

1. Mix food water with water and rinse your mouth for 2-3 minutes.

Doctor's comment: Sodium bicarbonate is used for baking and as a baking powder. It can also be used to whiten teeth, soften foods cooked in water, clean homes and absorb odors.

The body secretes sodium bicarbonate in the stomach. Edible soda can help neutralize gastric juice. For the same reason, it is included in animal feed mixtures. However, when soda is consumed, a rebound syndrome occurs: increased "heartburn" after a few hours. With gastritis, the consumption of soda can do more harm than good. If nausea is caused not by gastritis, but by another disease, soda is a useless remedy.

2. Add a few basil leaves to a salad or main course. Take with food 2-3 times a day.

Doctor's comment: Most types of basil contain from 0.3 to 1.5% of the essential oil in the leaves. Depending on the type, harvest time and origin, the concentration of linalool, estragol or camphor varies. In addition to carbohydrates and protein, the leaves contain vitamin A, C, as well as oleanolic and ursolic acid.

Basil has a slight antiemetic effect on the gastrointestinal tract, but the effect is so weak that it has no clinical significance. Folk remedies for nausea with basil taste good, but will not help with nausea or severe vomiting.

3. Take ginger tea 4 times a day with sugar and a small amount of table salt.

Doctor's comment: The antiemetic effect of ginger is mediated by a direct effect on the gastrointestinal tract. Scientists believe that effectiveness is due to the antagonism of 5-HT3 receptors. A meta-analysis showed a moderate effect of ginger on the incidence of postoperative vomiting compared to placebo.

Although many sailors find ginger useful, there is no evidence of effectiveness in treating motion sickness. However, in a small double-blind study conducted on 80 Danish sailors, ginger reduced nausea compared to placebo to a large extent. In a study at Brigham Young University in the United States, 20 students received a placebo, 12 took dimenhydrinate, and 12 received dried ginger.

Subsequently, the participants had to sit for 6 minutes in a chair, which turned, rose and fell at the same time. While the placebo group could not stand the full time and felt severe nausea, the ginger group could remain on the chair for 6 minutes. The group receiving the drug remained on the stool longer than the placebo group, but only 4 minutes on average. There is no convincing evidence of efficacy in the treatment of toxicosis in pregnant women.

The recipe is useful, but with vomiting, ginger will not help. It is important to understand that the plant is capable of causing an allergic reaction, so it is not suitable for all patients.

4. Take 4 slices of lemon.

Doctor's comment:Lemon contains a lot of vitamin C and is used in small quantities in many dishes as a seasoning. A high concentration of organic acids can aggravate the course of nausea. The abuse of lemon enhances the feeling of nausea, as Spanish studies have shown. Potentially dangerous and unpleasant recipe.

Folk remedies for nausea: physical methods

1. Cold compress.

Doctor's comment: stimulation of cold receptors slightly reduces nausea caused by diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. With neurogenic or psychogenic nausea, the recipe is completely useless. With chemotherapy-induced vomiting, cold can greatly increase the feeling of nausea.

Folk remedies for nausea do more harm, because they act on the symptom, not taking into account the root cause. In case of nausea or vomiting, it is recommended to consult a doctor to help find out the cause. Self-medication is not recommended, as this is fraught with unpredictable consequences.
